Educators staying up to date, and understanding the material they are teaching is important. I was struck by the importance of staying current while learning about how Carole Fullerton teaches addition and subtraction. Her techniques are so different than how I was taught myself. Regrouping is no more, and her strategies are unique. I ate it up. I read. I studied. I attended a workshop with her. Most importantly, I employed her strategies in the classroom with a growing confidence. These techniques included materials such as ten frames, hundred charts, number lines, more or less spinners, and templates for addition that removed bridging. I had discovered that my three children had also been learning math by adding hundreds, tens and ones and representing this knowledge using these math manipulatives. I have found a excitement to teach math with a new energy using this strategic math teaching philosophy. I am a new Carole Fullerton disciple and have already added her books to my Christmas wish list.
